Example of 5-Day Literacy Plan using Open Court

Modifications


Modifications in Monday's lesson:

  • Song of the Train poem was condensed from two days to one
  • Alphabet strip review was added since group did not know all of their letters (PALS)
  • Alternate spellings in program were eliminated
  • Initial sound sort using objects was added to reinforce the target letter sounds
  • Alternate activity was inserted for sound and letter review - sound sheet
  • Would You Like to Fly? along with all activities were inserted for small group because no connected text was included for that day for student practice

  • On the Go story was condensed from three days to two (it is even continued to the next week in the basal)
  • Alphabet strip review was added since group did not know all of their letters (PALS)
  • Reread was added for extra practice in text
  • Alternate spellings in program were eliminated
  • Initial sound sort using objects was added to reinforce the target letter sounds
  • Alternate activity was inserted for sound and letter review - initial sound cube
  • Dictations were changed from writing individual words to writing a sentence using the target words

Modifications in Wednesday's lesson:

  • On the Go story was condensed from three days to two (it is even continued to the next week in the basal)
  • Alphabet strip review was added since group did not know all of their letters (PALS)
  • Reread was added for extra practice in text
  • Alternate spellings in program were eliminated
  • Initial sound sort using objects was added to reinforce the target letter sounds
  • Alternate activity was inserted for sound and letter review - initial sound spinner
  • Trucks along with all activities were inserted for small group because no connected text was included for that day for student practice
  • Dictations were changed from writing individual words to writing a sentence using the target words

  • The Listening Walk was added for the read aloud (from the list provided by the basal); comprehension strategies & skills from previous days were included; vocabulary work and high frequency words were included as in previous lessons
  • Alphabet strip review was added since group did not know all of their letters (PALS)
  • Reread was added for extra practice in text
  • Alternate spellings in program were eliminated
  • Initial sound sort using objects was added to reinforce the target letter sounds
  • Alternate activity was inserted for sound and letter review - initial sound sort

  • The Plane was added for the read aloud (from the list provided by the basal); comprehension strategies & skills from previous days were included; vocabulary work and high frequency words were included as in previous lessons
  • Alphabet strip review was added since group did not know all of their letters (PALS)
  • Reread was added for extra practice in text
  • Alternate activity was inserted for sound and letter review - initial sound Bingo
  • Who's Coming for a Ride? along with all activities were inserted for small group because no connected text was included for that day for student practice
  • Dictations were changed from writing individual words to writing a sentence using the target words
